WHAT WILL A DECRA ROOF NORMALLY COST?
The cost of the Decra® roof depends on location and the complexity of your roof’s design. But remember you will always need to calculate the price tag of a roof as a whole. Including accessories, installation etc., and make your calculations based on the long term service life of your roof. You will not need to replace your Decra® roof after only one or two decades, as in the case of some other, cheap roof tiles. Re-roofing has additional costs, such as the reinforcing or removal and disposal of the old roof in case you purchase heavy clay or concrete tiles. Since Decra® can even be up to 7-times lighter than those, you may be able to use your current roof structure. If you live in a coastal or high-wind location, a Decra® roof is likely to be less expensive than any other type of roof, because it won’t require special materials or fastenings to cope with extreme conditions.
DECRA PRODUCTS ARE LIGHT, SO WILL THEY BE BLOWN AWAY BY STRONG WIND?
Given that all products are anchored together in place, and they are also mechanically screwed into place in the support structure, the system will definitely not be blown away. We use specially designed tile screws that are capable of resisting corrosion and maintaining strength even during high wind event. CAN WE DO RE-ROOFING OVER AN EXISTING ROOF?
Light weight Decra® tiles can be placed right on top of your current asphalt shingle or fiber cement roof. Only a professional assessment is needed and new battens to fasten Decra® tiles onto.
HOW WILL DECRA PROTECT MY HOME FROM A HAIL STORM?
Decra® is remarkably resistant to damage from hailstones of up to 30 mm. Even a massive hailstone as large as 90 mm cannot penetrate through stone-coated steel. You will not need to be afraid of tile breakages, roof leakages or the need to replace parts of your roof after a hailstorm if you have a Decra® roof. You can be assured that your family and property are safe under your DECRA roof.
WILL DECRA ROOFS CORRODE AND HAVE RUST?
It definitely will not. All Decra® products are made of a tried and tested steel roof with aluminum zinc coating called AZ150 -- conforms to AS 1397:2001 standard that provides superior corrosion resistance performance and coated with acrylic basecoat, natural/ceramic coated volcanic stone chips and acrylic overglaze; The excellent corrosion resistance of AZ150 is attributable to the properties of the main components: on the surface of the cladding, aluminum and zinc function as a barrier against corrosive substances and protects the steel via the “sacrificial effect”.
WILL THE STONE CHIPS COME OFF AFTER SOME TIME?
Decra’s basecoat bonds the stone granules to the surface of the tile for the lifetime of the tile. The stone chips are bonded to the tile by means of the basecoat. It serves two main purposes: first, to bond the stone chips, which form the decorative layer, onto the tile and secondly, to protect the underlying layer from water and UV radiation. The small loss of chips at the edge of the tile during the installation process is normal, as these are not meant to stay on the tile.
ARE METAL ROOFS HOTTER DURING SUMMER?
Decra’s customers report a reduction in energy costs. Because a metal roof can reflect much of the solar radiation. Furthermore, metal roofs re-emit most of the solar radiation absorbed. Unlike heavy roofs like concrete or clay that absorb heat and trap it within the space between the ceiling and the roof, Decra roofs are able to cool down quickly. It is also significantly better than asphalt shingle roof since Decra is not a closed roof and allows cool air to ventilate
CAN I WALK ON MY DECRA ROOF?
Yes. Weight should be placed directly over the batten when walking on the roof. However, we do not recommend walking on Decra® tiles, unless it is absolutely necessary and only for professionals properly equipped with the required safety equipment and training.
ARE METAL ROOFS MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO A LIGHTNING STRIKE?
Decra® roof is no more susceptible to a lightning strike than any other roofing material. It only depends on the height and location of the building. It is strongly advised for people to refrain from standing on top of any roof during a storm.
ARE DECRA PRODUCTS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?
Their long lifespan means that you will not have to replace Decra® products for decades to come, which results in a lower burden on the environment as no new roofing work is needed. The products are also made of steel that can be recycled in the same way as steel cans or vehicle parts. WILL THE DECRA STONE CHIPS FADE AND EVENTUALLY LOSE COLOR?
DECRA uses natural volcanic stone chips that are quarried from various sites across New Zealand. Special colors that are not naturally available use volcanic stone chips that are ceramic coated and baked in extreme temperatures. It will not fade and lose color. Dirt may cover the natural tile color over time but a simple roof wash will bring out the tile color vibrancy again.
ARE DECRA ROOFS HEAVY AND DIFFICULT TO INSTALL?
DECRA roofing tiles are lightweight and can easily be transported and carried up to the roof. Installation is very easy as it only requires a few screws to properly secure it. Using proper tools and safety equipment will significantly increase productivity and safety while working on the roof.
ARE DECRA ROOFS NOISY?
A DECRA roof has excellent noise reduction qualities compared to a traditional metal roof. The stone chips in the tile surface and the interlocking system significantly reduces the noise compared to an ordinary painted steel roof. In a rain induced test conducted in the Acoustics Institute in New Zealand, DECRA roofs was tested to reach approx. 48dBA; that is only 3 dBA higher that a concrete roof. Ordinary metal rib type roofs are at approx. 57 dBA.
